Cape Town – Thursday 2 November 2017 – Every South African senior citizen deserves a secure and comfortable retirement. For two 75-year-old PowerBall winners this rang true when they both learnt of their Powerball winnings – R13 million for a Free State pensioner and R6 million for Western Cape pensioner. Even though the pair have never met, they shared a common excitement when realising they are one of South Africans oldest millionaires.
A regular Powerball player in his twilight years, the Western Cape pensioner says even though he is officially retired he still keeps busy with small construction/building projects. “I have always believed in hard work and earning a living for my family, now that I am retired there is no reason to stop working.”
The PowerBall jackpot winner bought four PowerBall tickets from the Post Office. He checked the following day and as he states: “I woke up poor and went to bed rich!” He says he shared his winning news with his wife and kids, and immediately plans to build a bigger house for his wife and grandchildren. “I am also planning on buying a reliable vehicle so that I can take my wife on a long road trip across South Africa.”
For Free State retiree, he showed that senior citizens do keep up with the times and always plays his Powerball via his banking phone app. “My wife constantly tells me about my beeping phone because of text messages, well this time around I told her my SMS’s were the bearer of good news, we have won the PowerBall,” he says cheerfully.

Tips for pensioners from Ithuba winner services financial advisors
According to financial advisor Mbuso Shange:
Financial planning must always be done in the interest of the client. I would find out from the elderly winner how his family relations are like – if bad I would quickly advise he/she buy into a retirement village. If good, Shange recommends he/she shares his winnings with children or grandchildren. The bulk of the winnings Shange advises investing in order to generate a monthly income from his winnings. If the elderly winner didn’t save enough for his pension and winning is a last rescue, he would advise them to get great medical aid, and even though costly at R4000 a month it is a necessity at this age.
