The National Lottery Operator, ITHUBA, is excited to announce that it has paid over R233 Million worth of Jackpot winnings in just two weeks! This is the largest combined jackpots payout in the history of the National Lottery and was paid out to multiple winners. The payout is another record-breaker by the third National Lottery Operator who took over lottery operations in 2015.
The winnings came from the following games:
The biggest winners came from PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS jackpots, with a R141 Million win on 23rd August and R70 Million on 3rd September, respectively. The R141 Million winner recently made contact with ITHUBA to claim his winnings, whilst ITHUBA is eagerly awaiting the winner of the R70 Million PowerBall PLUS jackpot to come forward. The winning ticket was purchased at Shell Garage in Sinoville, Pretoria using a manual selection with a ticket wager of just R7.50.
“We trust that the winner will make contact with us in the next few days. If not, we will use all available media channels, including social media networks to raise awareness and hopefully reach the holder of the winning ticket”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.
Whilst the PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS Jackpots have paid out sizeable amounts, the LOTTO PLUS 1 jackpot of R9Million was also claimed on 27th August 2019 by a single winner who purchased the winning ticket at Pick n Pay in Tseles Shopping Centre, Soweto.
The newest game in the portfolio, DAILY LOTTO, is also making significant contributions towards sales and sees players winning daily since the jackpots don’t roll over but rather roll down to the next prize divisions should there be no winner in prize division 1. Since its launch in March 2019, DAILY LOTTO has paid out R207 548 890 to the time of going to press. “When ITHUBA was awarded the license to operate the National Lottery in 2015, we promised to reinvigorate the National Lottery and really optimise the gaming experience for our players. Our track record speaks for itself, ITHUBA has not only delivered on bigger jackpots but we’ve achieved a number of record breaking milestones and we are only half way through our license. To be able to pay over R233 Million to 28 winners in just under 2 weeks, is really something worth celebrating”, said Mabuza.

The National Lottery Operator ITHUBA has announced that daily games PICK 3 and RAPIDO will be decommissioned from Friday 15 March 2019. This simply means that from the 15th, players will not be able to play these games as they will officially be removed from the South African National Lottery portfolio.
Commenting on why the games are being cancelled, ITHUBA says that this is in response to players’ feedback. “The National Lottery players are of vital importance to us and as such, we really take the time to understand what motivates our players to participate in National Lottery games. Following extensive market research, our players are looking for a daily game that is more compelling and provides more opportunities to win. It is for this reason that we removed PICK 3 and RAPIDO and have launched the exciting DAILY LOTTO game”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.
The recently launched DAILY LOTTO promises to offer estimated daily jackpots between R100 000 and R250 000 which do not roll over but rather roll down to the next prize Division, guaranteeing winners daily. Just a few days after the launch, the DAILY LOTTO had its first jackpot winner who won R215 993 on Tuesday 12 March. ITHUBA says that this jackpot win is very encouraging and is proof that the DAILY LOTTO has sparked great interest among players.
“It is our responsibility as the National Lottery Operator to keep enhancing games, whilst ensuring that we provide an exciting, reinvigorated and progressive game portfolio”, said Mabuza.
ITHUBA has assured the public that players that have won from both PICK 3 and RAPIDO will still be eligible to claim their winnings within 365 days after the applicable draw dates, even after the decommissioning date. Daily draws for PICK 3 will continue up to 20th March for all players that purchased tickets for future draws.
The National Lottery Operator ITHUBA, has announced the official launch of DAILY LOTTO, a new game that offers players DAILY JACKPOTS WITH GUARANTEED WINNERS EVERYDAY. The first draw will take place on Sunday 10 March 2019, at 09:00pm and every evening at the same time thereafter.
The game consists of only 36 numbers, and players need to select and match 5 numbers in order to win the jackpot. However a share prize will be paid out up to division 4, this means that even if players match a minimum of two numbers, they are still eligible to receive the applicable payout amount allocated to the specific division. Numbers can be selected using a manual or QuickPick selection method at a cost of R3 per board.
“DAILY LOTTO is unique from our other games in many ways. With this game there is no jackpot rollover, every cent of the jackpot prize will be won and when there is no jackpot winner, the jackpot amount will roll down into the next prize division and be shared among all players matching 4 numbers. There are four prizes for matching 2, 3, 4 or 5 numbers correctly. The estimated jackpots for DAILY LOTTO start from R100 000 and will vary depending on player participation,” said Khensani Mabuza, Executive Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.
Ticket sales for the DAILY LOTTO will open on 10 March 2019 and can be bought at participating retail stores and on the National Lottery website (www.nationallottery.co.za ) and Mobile APP. Following each evening draw, players can view the winning numbers on all the National Lottery’s platforms including social media pages, soon after 09:00pm every night. Players can also check their tickets at participating retailers, as well as on various print and digital media platforms. Ticket sales close for the daily draws at 08:30pm.
IT’S OUT with the old and in with the new for the TV draws of the National Lottery operator, ITHUBA. After 17 years of much the same format, ITHUBA felt the time was right for the South African Lottery to upgrade its television shows which attract millions of viewers each week. Since 1999, changes to the draw shows have been merely cosmetic, so this move is part of ITHUBA’s bid to modernise the lottery industry.
Starting from 8 September, it’s good bye to the dated ball machines and hello to a world of leading digital random number technology which displays the winning numbers with catchy CGI animation and dynamic graphics. The new draw shows will be introduced by the existing presenters and will feature a rich variety of constantly changing new content, from videos of lottery winners to items featuring the good causes the lottery money is funding.
ITHUBA’s CEO, Mrs Charmaine Mabuza shared her thoughts about the new shows, “Without change, there is no room for improvement. When ITHUBA entered the industry, many believed we had set ourselves an impossible task when we promised to reinvigorate the lottery. Through our market research, South Africans told us they yearned for newness and excitement, so ITHUBA has geared its business to deliver to our players what they asked for. At ITHUBA we are focusing all our energies, not on fighting the old but on building the new. The days when draw shows were about spinning a wheel or pressing a button are behind us”.
This coming weekend two of the National Lottery games have guaranteed jackpots totalling R30 million. On Friday players have a chance to win the PowerBall Plus R20 million guaranteed jackpot. A day later, on Saturday, players can try their luck on LOTTO Plus 2 that has a R10 million guaranteed jackpot.
The new PowerBall show will air on Friday the 8 September on e.TV at 21h00 and a day later at 20h56, the new LOTTO show will air on SABC 2.

In what has become a trend, Ithuba once again emerged victorious after former lottery operator, Gidani, was unsuccessful in the latest of a number of court challenges aimed at attempting to reclaim the lottery licence.
Today’s North Gauteng High Court judgement follows on the heels of a Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) decision which in March dismissed with costs an appeal by Gidani against an earlier adverse judgement. The SCA in Bloemfontein ruled that there was no “justifiable” merit for an appeal and that there was “no reasonable prospect of success” on the matter.
The SCA application related to an unsuccessful 2014 legal challenge by Gidani against Trade and Industry Minister, Rob Davies for having awarded the third National Lottery licence to Ithuba.
Gidani has failed to reclaim the lottery licence.
Outside the Pretoria High Court, an elated Ithuba CEO Mrs Charmaine Mabuza said: “We are delighted with the outcome of the litigation and assure the South African public that we will continue to focus on invigorating the National Lottery and delivering a world class service. This judgement affirms our view that Ithuba is the legitimate and preferred licence operator of the South African National Lottery.”
DESPITE having already created 85 millionaires in just over a year, lottery operator, Ithuba, has also raised more than R1-billion towards good causes.
The SA Rio Olympics team which recently returned from Brazil with 10 medals was among the beneficiaries. This was South Africa’s best ever performance at the games since re-admission into major world sporting events.
The SA Paralympic team, currently competing in Rio and raising the SA flag high also benefitted from the allocations towards good causes. The National Lotteries Commission spent R2.4-billion supporting more than 3000 projects between June 2015 and June 2016. Ithuba has contributed R1.1-billion towards that expenditure.
The South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee, Athletics South Africa and The Sports Trust were among the 18 beneficiaries in various sectors, including education, arts and culture, to have been financially supported by the NLC recently.
Ithuba had raised the money in just 12 months of operating the lottery since it was awarded the third national lottery licence. Ithuba hit the ground running as it has already modified all lottery games making them more appealing and exciting.
Ithuba’s unmatched bold lottery offering has already ensured that players win often, as a result 132 jackpots have been won across all lottery games. This includes a total of 47 Lotto jackpots where winners took home R1-million-plus while the popular Powerball game, known for its bigger jackpots, has already produced 18 millionaires.
Second opportunity games, the Lotto Plus and Powerball Plus have also produced 12 and 8 millionaires respectively. More than 500-million lottery tickets have been sold across the country and payouts amounting to more than R100-billion have been made.
Ithuba is pleased with the Pretoria High Court’s decision to dismiss Gidani’s application for leave to appeal with costs. Gidani’s latest application is a sequel to a number of unsuccessful attempts by them to claim an entitlement to operate the National Lottery.
Ithuba’s CEO, Mrs Charmaine Mabuza, stated that: “Ithuba operates as a world class operator and has brought back the fun and excitement for players of the National Lottery. Ithuba’s gaming portfolio has already contributed over R1 billion to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF). Ithuba promised to invigorate the Lottery and increase player participation by offering higher rewards. To date there have been over 500 million tickets sold and more than R2.4 billion has been paid out to all winners. Ithuba is delighted that the National Lottery is seeing increasing player participation. “
ITHUBA’s reinvigoration of SA’s lottery games has seen Powerball overtaking Lotto as the most popular lottery game.
Since Ithuba took over as SA’s third national lottery licence operator in June last year, it has significantly increased the number of locations where the lottery may be played, making the lottery games accessible to more South Africans.
The introduction of the Powerball Plus game which presents players with an extra chance to win and an improved Powerball game with a modified prize structure that allows for bigger jackpots, saw average weekly sales skyrocketing to over R100-million. This represented a 25% year on year sales growth during December and January.
Between November 28, 2015 and January 16, 2016, weekly sales stood at an average of R108-million as Ithuba’s expanded marketing spend; increased prize pay-out percentage and intensified jackpot awareness initiatives, among others, had grown the players™ interest in the lottery games.
During the same period in November 2014 and January 2015 under the previous lottery operator, the weekly average was R86-million. During this time, Ithuba achieved a weekly high of R140 million which was the second highest total in the history of the South Africa National Lottery.
This was achieved despite Ithuba not having an ideal start with part of its resources focused on a protracted legal battle with the previous lottery operator.
However not to be distracted by this but rather armed with a bold vision and unmatched strategy to bring the fun and excitement back into the lottery games, Ithuba came out strong and still managed to work hard to provide the country with a lottery service every week.
Ithuba’s bold marketing drive, new games and the modification of the existing games has already grown the lottery and led to good revenues as it successfully brought back interest in the lottery games which was fading away.
The fact that the Powerball sales have now surpassed those of Lotto is a clear indication of the massive positive impact the newly introduced changes by Ithuba have made.
Ithuba had forecast that by June 2, 2016, annual weekly sales would average R94-million, with total annual sales totalling R4.9-billion; however it has already exceeded projections since the introduction of the improved Powerball and Powerball Plus. In comparison, the last full year of the previous operator’s operation only achieved an R86-million weekly sales average missing its projections by almost 50%.
Ithuba is pleased to confirm that it is on track with its mission aimed at growing and reinvigorating the lottery to ensure that good causes benefit more and players enjoy additional chances of winning.
