R232 MILLION POWERBALL JACKPOT WINNER HAS COME FORWARD
Written by Hendrik RautenbachOn Tuesday 19 February, the National Lottery Operator ITHUBA, announced that after 24 rollovers, the record-breaking PowerBall jackpot had been won by a single ticket holder.
ITHUBA has confirmed that the winner of the historic R232 Million PowerBall jackpot has come forward to claim their winnings on Monday 25 February 2019. According to ITHUBA, the winner says they heard on the radio that the anonymous winning ticket was bought at the OK Mini Mark in Tygerdal, Goodwood, Western Cape. “The winner said that he then decided to go check if he had won anything and to his disbelief, he discovered that he was actually holding the winning ticket”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.
Since the announcement of the R232 Million PowerBall jackpot win, there has been an increasing interest from South Africans through social and mainstream media, regarding the whereabouts of the winner. ITHUBA says that they are happy to finally tell the story of the biggest jackpot winner in the history of the South African National Lottery.
In a televised interview on Tuesday 26 February, the winner, a blue-collar worker in his 50’s, said that the psychological counselling and financial advice he received from ITHUBA, has helped him to put things into perspective regarding his next financial move. These services are part of ITHUBA’s Winner Services package and come at no additional cost to the winner.
Prior to this win on 19 February 2019, the PowerBall jackpot had reached R210 Million for Friday the 15th and in celebration of the then highest jackpot, ITHUBA embarked on a campaign which they called the #210PowerBallRandomActsofKindness challenge. As part of the National campaign, ITHUBA surprised the public with ‘random acts of kindness’ which included randomly paying for customers’ fuel, groceries and taxi-fare.
The winner becomes the richest National Lottery jackpot winner in South Africa, shedding off the title from the 34 year-old R145 Million jackpot winner in August 2018.

The R64 million PowerBall jackpot winner is ready to retire and build a home for his family. The 42-year-old who originally comes from Limpopo but lives and works in Cape Town, was still in shock when he came to the ITHUBA offices to claim his winnings. He said that he still could not believe that he was the latest PowerBall multimillionaire.
Spending an average of R60 on PowerBall every week, the winner said he had never won anything greater than R900 from playing Lottery games, but that did not deter him. The overwhelmed winner expressed that even though he has always wanted to hit the jackpot, he couldn’t believe that it had finally happened to him.
“I was attending a family gathering in Limpopo when my partner called to tell me that she was looking at my ticket and the draw results and I had won the jackpot. At first I thought she was joking, but her voice was filled with too much emotion so I knew she was serious. I only believed it when I got back home and checked the ticket myself. I was immediately overcome by instant shock and excitement,” he said.
Recalling all the times he played the Lottery, the winner added that all his attempts were not in vain but were preparing him for this.
“I prayed before I played PowerBall and today I am R64 million richer. Thanks to PowerBall, my days of being a security guard are finally behind me. I am looking forward to retiring in the house of my dreams with my family and providing the best education for my children.”
The father of 2 said he was excited as he could now plan to marry his partner of 18 years and finally realise his dream of starting his own soccer team. Considering himself to being a careful spender, he concluded that this money would bring much needed financial relief in his life.

Member of the Executive team at ITHUBA Khensani Mabuza, says: “The Lottery winnings are regarded as capital in nature and not included in the taxable income of the individual. Once the winner starts generating interest from their winnings, only the accumulated interest will be subjected to tax. The amount of interest taxed will of course depend on the amount of money the winner chooses to invest.”
Mabuza goes on to say that it is fair for the new millionaires to keep all of their new wealth: “An unexpected windfall worth millions can really change the receiver’s life, but the extent of its impact can be quite limited once the taxman takes his cut. A lot of the lottery winners are really just ordinary South Africans who deserve a chance to a new life. It is a great thing that these winners have an opportunity to start their new life with each and every single cent that they have won. The fact that the interest generated from their winnings then becomes taxable, puts a responsibility to the winners to make sound investment decisions that will give them good returns”, said Mabuza.

The breaking news search for the R145 multi-millionaire from Mpumalanga is over, the winner has claimed his prize!
The overnight multi-millionaire is still in disbelief. Reminiscing on the day that he found out that he had won, the 34-year-old said:
“It was at about 2PM on Saturday (4 August 2018) when my life changing moment happened, I went onto the National Lottery website and matched my ticket against the draw results. I was in shock when I realized that I had won,” he said.
The avid engineer from Evander in Mpumalanga reported for work on Monday with the winning ticket stashed in his sock for safe keeping.
“Although it still felt like a dream, I comprehended that I had won and I didn’t want to part with my ticket,” he said.
Accompanied by his wife in matching outfits, the young couple came to the ITHUBA offices in Sandton on Tuesday. He explained that the reality that he had won the jackpot only sunk in after he had his ticket verified at the ITHUBA offices. The business minded winner said that he has always dreamt of starting and running his own business and this money would finally make his dreams come true without stressing about funding.
Describing himself as a careful spender, he expressed appreciation for the financial advice service that ITHUBA provides to their winners. The winner also particularly appreciated the psychological counselling that the Operator offers to winners, acknowledging that this instant large sum of money must be accompanied by psychological assistance.
Asked if he used any special method to choose his numbers, the winner said: “I had a good feeling about these numbers since last week, I played the numbers for Tuesday’s PowerBall, but didn’t win. I played the same numbers again on Friday and I won the PowerBall.”
ITHUBA has confirmed that the winner spent R20 on his winning ticket. The ticket was bought at a Total Garage in Evander, Mpumalanga.

The South African National Lottery is happy to announce that two of the biggest PowerBall and LOTTO jackpots won from KwaZulu-Natal have been claimed by two ecstatic men from the region. The two winners from Durban won R58.7 million and R34.4 million respectively.
The man who bought his ticket from Ladysmith while travelling to Durban could not contain his excitement when he realised that he was the winner of the life-changing R58.7 million PowerBall PLUS jackpot. The winner in his 50s bought his ticket for only R30 and randomly selected his numbers. The second multi-millionaire winner from Umlazi, a man his 30s, said he was beyond happy about his winnings especially since he is unemployed. The winner bought his ticket at a Spar in Umlazi where he spent R60 and won the R34.4 million LOTTO jackpot. The LOTTO winner said he plans on investing in property and will invest the rest of his winnings. He also has intentions of helping his family improve their lives and will buy a house for his parents. The winner also plans to travel and will also start a business to ensure that he never has to suffer again from poverty.
Both winners received financial advice, trauma and emotional counselling. The service offered by Ithuba to its winner is to ensure that winners are able to deal with their newly found financial statuses. The service also includes advice on property and business.

Mega multi-million rand jackpots in tonight’s PowerBall and PowerBall Plus draws

THERE is a staggering R45 million up for grabs in tonight’s (Tuesday, 12 April) PowerBall and PowerBall Plus draws after numerous rollovers.
Both games have big jackpots worth a whopping R45.6 million combined. A lucky player that will match all five numbers and the PowerBall will most likely be South Africa’s newest multi-millionaire.
