The National Lottery Operator, ITHUBA, is excited to announce that it has paid over R233 Million worth of Jackpot winnings in just two weeks! This is the largest combined jackpots payout in the history of the National Lottery and was paid out to multiple winners. The payout is another record-breaker by the third National Lottery Operator who took over lottery operations in 2015.

The winnings came from the following games:

The biggest winners came from PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS jackpots, with a R141 Million win on 23rd August and R70 Million on 3rd September, respectively. The R141 Million winner recently made contact with ITHUBA to claim his winnings, whilst ITHUBA is eagerly awaiting the winner of the R70 Million PowerBall PLUS jackpot to come forward. The winning ticket was purchased at Shell Garage in Sinoville, Pretoria using a manual selection with a ticket wager of just R7.50.

“We trust that the winner will make contact with us in the next few days. If not, we will use all available media channels, including social media networks to raise awareness and hopefully reach the holder of the winning ticket”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.

Whilst the PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS Jackpots have paid out sizeable amounts, the LOTTO PLUS 1 jackpot of R9Million was also claimed on 27th August 2019 by a single winner who purchased the winning ticket at Pick n Pay in Tseles Shopping Centre, Soweto.

The newest game in the portfolio, DAILY LOTTO, is also making significant contributions towards sales and sees players winning daily since the jackpots don’t roll over but rather roll down to the next prize divisions should there be no winner in prize division 1. Since its launch in March 2019, DAILY LOTTO has paid out R207 548 890 to the time of going to press. “When ITHUBA was awarded the license to operate the National Lottery in 2015, we promised to reinvigorate the National Lottery and really optimise the gaming experience for our players. Our track record speaks for itself, ITHUBA has not only delivered on bigger jackpots but we’ve achieved a number of record breaking milestones and we are only half way through our license. To be able to pay over R233 Million to 28 winners in just under 2 weeks, is really something worth celebrating”, said Mabuza.

The winner of the R141 Million PowerBall jackpot from the Friday 23 August 2019 draw has come forward to claim his winnings.  The winning ticket was purchased at a Spar in Groot Brakrivier, Western Cape. He becomes the third richest PowerBall jackpot winner in South Africa with a whooping R141 Million after playing a ticket wager of just R105 via a Quick Pick selection method, he joins the R232 Million winner from February 2019 and R145 Million winner from August 2018.

The 50 year old man who is in construction and was on holiday in the Mossel Bay region with his wife when he bought the winning ticket and says buying the ticket was part of their plans that day. He says he hardly plays the National Lottery games but something on that day told him that he should play it and it’s his lucky day.

The winner’s wife says that a few weeks before her husband played, she had dreamt that she saw gold particles being sprinkled all over her husband. The following morning, she told the husband about the dream. She believes this was a sign from God that her husband will soon be showered with blessings.  She says she is glad she told her husband about the dream as it could have been hard for anyone to believe her premonition that he has won jackpot.

Whilst many lottery players have set playing methods on how they choose their numbers, a notable percentage cite dreaming of winning numbers and then going to play them.

The couple say they do not plan on making drastic changes to their lives because they prefer the quite life. They will both continue working and plan to invest the money so that their children and grandchildren can have a secured future for generations to come.

The winner received financial advice and trauma counselling from ITHUBA, a free service that is offered to all winners of above R50 000.

The PowerBall jackpot from the Friday 23 August 2019 draw was won. ITHUBA confirmed that the winning ticket was purchased at a Spar in Groot Brakrivier, Cape Town.

Using a ticket wager of just R105 and a Quick Pick selection, the winner of a whopping R141 Million becomes the third richest jackpot PowerBall winner in South Africa, joining the R232 Million winner from February 2019, and the R145 Million winner from August 2018.

On Monday 26 August, ITHUBA reported that the winner had not yet made contact with the National Lottery Operator to claim their winnings.

Meanwhile, on 21 August 2019, a lucky player scooped the R9 Million LOTTO PLUS 1 jackpot. The winner, who bought their ticket at a Pick n’ Pay in Moletsane, Soweto spent R10 on their ticket, using a manual selection.

ITHUBA says that they are ready to receive both winners. “We trust that the winners are aware that they hold winning tickets and that they will get in touch with our office as soon as possible. Our Winner Services department is ready to welcome and assist them through a smooth claiming process”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive.

A R30 ticket wager and a manual selection of numbers was all it took for a 39 year old man to win the whopping R55 Million PowerBall jackpot from the 4th of June 2019 draw.

The winner, who says he’s a regular Lottery player, recently visited the ITHUBA office in Sandton to claim his new fortune. In the company of his partner and his father-in-law, he told ITHUBA that this windfall would change his life in a big way. “The first thing that I want to do is to invest a large sum of my winnings so I don’t ever have to face financial challenges again.  I also want to buy a house where my partner and our two children can live, we have been staying at her parents’ house and I have been longing for us to own a home of our own. One other important wish I have been hoping to fulfill, is to pursue tertiary education. Now that I can afford to, I plan to register the first chance I get.”

The winner says he will donate some money to close family and relatives to help improve their lives as well. He accepted the financial advice and trauma counselling that ITHUBA offers to all winners of R50, 000 and above.

Players can purchase PowerBall tickets from participating retailers, the National Lottery website, Mobile App or participating banking channels at any time before 8:30pm on the day of the draw.

The winner of the R12 Million jackpot from the 2nd March 2019 Lotto PLUS 1 draw has come forward. The 34-year-old Zimbabwean man who has been living in South Africa for 10 years now, was overwhelmed with emotions as he told ITHUBA of his humble background.

“My parents passed away when I was still very young and my sister had to step in as a mother figure to my siblings and I. Growing up in a child-headed home was tough – the poverty just never improved”, told the winner.

“When I was in my early 20s, my friend who was already living and working in Durban suggested that I come to look for work in South Africa to help ease my circumstances at home. I stayed in Durban for 5 years and during that time, I worked a lot of different casual and domestic jobs. One of the companies that I used to work for during their annual trade in Durban, recognised my hard work and offered me a permanent job at their head office in Johannesburg. This move changed my life. I was able to rent a decent place to stay and was able to help my family back at home to have food on the table every day. I thought that my life could not get better than that”, explains the winner.

“A few weeks ago, I decided to give LOTTO a try for the first time and I won just over R200. I decided to play again and this time I ticked the PLUS 1 and PLUS 2 options. I did not think much about the numbers, I just randomly selected them. I could not believe it when I learnt that I, in fact, had a winning ticket – I won R12 Million!”

The winner told ITHUBA that he was worried about how he was going to use this money towards a long term financial stability. “I was so relieved to learn that ITHUBA offers psychological counselling and financial advice which have both helped me a lot. I will use my winnings to buy myself a house, renovate my family home in Zimbabwe, buy a car and invest the rest of the money.”

Commenting on who is eligible to play the Lottery and claim winnings, ITHUBA says anyone who is 18 years or older, holds a valid proof of identity and has a valid South African bank account is permitted to play, win and claim from the National Lottery. All winners claiming R50 000 and above qualify to receive psychological counselling and financial advice which are part of ITHUBA’s free winner services package.

The National Lottery Operator ITHUBA has announced that daily games PICK 3 and RAPIDO will be decommissioned from Friday 15 March 2019. This simply means that from the 15th, players will not be able to play these games as they will officially be removed from the South African National Lottery portfolio.

Commenting on why the games are being cancelled, ITHUBA says that this is in response to players’ feedback. “The National Lottery players are of vital importance to us and as such, we really take the time to understand what motivates our players to participate in National Lottery games. Following extensive market research, our players are looking for a daily game that is more compelling and provides more opportunities to win. It is for this reason that we removed PICK 3 and RAPIDO and have launched the exciting DAILY LOTTO game”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.

The recently launched DAILY LOTTO promises to offer estimated daily jackpots between R100 000 and R250 000 which do not roll over but rather roll down to the next prize Division, guaranteeing winners daily. Just a few days after the launch, the DAILY LOTTO had its first jackpot winner who won R215 993 on Tuesday 12 March. ITHUBA says that this jackpot win is very encouraging and is proof that the DAILY LOTTO has sparked great interest among players.

“It is our responsibility as the National Lottery Operator to keep enhancing games, whilst ensuring that we provide an exciting, reinvigorated and progressive game portfolio”, said Mabuza.

ITHUBA has assured the public that players that have won from both PICK 3 and RAPIDO will still be eligible to claim their winnings within 365 days after the applicable draw dates, even after the decommissioning date. Daily draws for PICK 3 will continue up to 20th March for all players that purchased tickets for future draws.

The National Lottery Operator ITHUBA, has announced the official launch of DAILY LOTTO, a new game that offers players DAILY JACKPOTS WITH GUARANTEED WINNERS EVERYDAY. The first draw will take place on Sunday 10 March 2019, at 09:00pm and every evening at the same time thereafter.

The game consists of only 36 numbers, and players need to select and match 5 numbers in order to win the jackpot. However a share prize will be paid out up to division 4, this means that even if players match a minimum of two numbers, they are still eligible to receive the applicable payout amount allocated to the specific division.  Numbers can be selected using a manual or QuickPick selection method at a cost of R3 per board.

“DAILY LOTTO is unique from our other games in many ways. With this game there is no jackpot rollover, every cent of the jackpot prize will be won and when there is no jackpot winner, the jackpot amount will roll down into the next prize division and be shared among all players matching 4 numbers. There are four prizes for matching 2, 3, 4 or 5 numbers correctly. The estimated jackpots for DAILY LOTTO start from R100 000 and will vary depending on player participation,” said Khensani Mabuza, Executive Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.

Ticket sales for the DAILY LOTTO will open on 10 March 2019 and can be bought at participating retail stores and on the National Lottery website (www.nationallottery.co.za ) and Mobile APP. Following each evening draw, players can view the winning numbers on all the National Lottery’s platforms including social media pages, soon after 09:00pm every night. Players can also check their tickets at participating retailers, as well as on various print and digital media platforms. Ticket sales close for the daily draws at 08:30pm.

On Tuesday 19 February, the National Lottery Operator ITHUBA, announced that after 24 rollovers, the record-breaking PowerBall jackpot had been won by a single ticket holder.

ITHUBA has confirmed that the winner of the historic R232 Million PowerBall jackpot has come forward to claim their winnings on Monday 25 February 2019. According to ITHUBA, the winner says they heard on the radio that the anonymous winning ticket was bought at the OK Mini Mark in Tygerdal, Goodwood, Western Cape. “The winner said that he then decided to go check if he had won anything and to his disbelief, he discovered that he was actually holding the winning ticket”, said Khensani Mabuza, Corporate Relations Executive at ITHUBA.

Since the announcement of the R232 Million PowerBall jackpot win, there has been an increasing interest from South Africans through social and mainstream media, regarding the whereabouts of the winner. ITHUBA says that they are happy to finally tell the story of the biggest jackpot winner in the history of the South African National Lottery.

In a televised interview on Tuesday 26 February, the winner, a blue-collar worker in his 50’s, said that the psychological counselling and financial advice he received from ITHUBA, has helped him to put things into perspective regarding his next financial move. These services are part of ITHUBA’s Winner Services package and come at no additional cost to the winner.

Prior to this win on 19 February 2019, the PowerBall jackpot had reached R210 Million for Friday the 15th and in celebration of the then highest jackpot, ITHUBA embarked on a campaign which they called the #210PowerBallRandomActsofKindness challenge. As part of the National campaign, ITHUBA surprised the public with ‘random acts of kindness’ which included randomly paying for customers’ fuel, groceries and taxi-fare.

The winner becomes the richest National Lottery jackpot winner in South Africa, shedding off the title from the 34 year-old R145 Million jackpot winner in August 2018.

On 21 December, the National Lottery Operator reported that 2 LOTTO jackpot winners had not come forward to claim their prizes. The R8,7 million LOTTO jackpot winner has since come forward to claim his prize.

The middle-aged man from Soweto arrived at the ITHUBA office in Sandton in the company of his male neighbor, whom he says he trusts completely. The winner admitted that he had already told various members of his family about his windfall. The unmarried father of 3 said that he had lost count of how many years he has been unemployed. He stays with his mother in a family home in Soweto, and said that one of the first things he wants to do with his money is to buy a house and build a better home for his children. “Winning this LOTTO jackpot has indeed uplifted my dignity. I have lost count of how many years I have been without a job. When I stopped working years ago, I used whatever money I had saved to start a loan business in the township as means of survival. Every month I lend people money and they return it with interest. It is with this money that I had been able to take care of my family and send my children to school.”

When asked about why it took him long to come forward to claim his winnings, he replied: “I didn’t realise that I had the winning ticket. I heard that there was a winner from Soweto – but Soweto is massive, I did not think it could be me. I checked my ticket at the retail store where I shop and I was shocked to learn that I had won the jackpot. Although I play the lottery very often, I was merely just hoping for a few hundreds of thousands, winning millions is a blessing. I am also a regular SportStake 13 player and have won a few thousands from the game. I actually thought my winnings would come from SportStake”, he said.

After receiving financial advice arranged and paid for by the National Lottery Operator the winner said:  “Following the financial advice I have received, I plan to buy a house, start a formalised business and invest a significant amount of my winnings so that I never have to worry about money again.”

The winner of the R46 million LOTTO PLUS 2 jackpot from the 8 December 2018 draw, has come forward.

The soft spoken 44 year old from a small town in Rustenburg, recently started her short term contract working as a construction worker just a few months ago after enduring 9 years of unemployment. She recalls how hard things have been for her and her children: “It has been very painful to not be able to provide my children with even their basic needs. One of the most painful things I’ve had to go through as a parent was to not be able to pay for my son’s participation in the matric farewell party – that really pained me, ” said the winner.

Concerned about her safety following her newly found wealth, the winner said that she was planning on moving out of the small town as soon as possible.  “Where I come from, everyone who knows me knows that I am a regular LOTTO player, I never miss an opportunity to become a millionaire even if I only have R5 to spend on a ticket. When word broke that the National Lottery was looking for the new jackpot winner who was infact from our town, people already suspected that it was me who has won”, she said.

The winner continued to say that the first thing she wants to do with her new fortune, is to buy a house for her and her family in an urban area where her children can access quality education.  She also has plans to develop herself by improving her own level of education. “I went to school up to standard 5 only. This has also made me feel ashamed because I always attributed my poverty to my lack of education. Now that I won’t have to worry about hustling for my family’s next meal, I will focus on upgrading my level of education. This is something I’d like to do for myself to restore my dignity. I’d like to also look into money management training to help me to continue handle money correctly.  The financial advice I received from ITHUBA has been a really good start for me. I was able to make wise investment decisions and I am comfortable to say that this money will guard me and my family our whole lives”, said the emotional winner.

He is one of two LOTTO PLUS 1 winners who each won R29 million from the 24 November LOTTO draw.

The winner says that he is a regular LOTTO and PowerBall player and has been playing for many years. However, he says that when he played his LOTTTO numbers last week for R50, using a QuickPick selection method, he did not imagine that he was just days away from being R29 million richer.

The elderly winner visited the National Lottery offices in the company of his son on Thursday, to finally claim his prize. He expressed both disbelief and gratitude for his new fortune that he refers to as a “blessing in his golden years”.

It seems that this jackpot could not have gone to a more deserving person. This winner is a community leader and has been a pillar of his community for decades. He has been running an old age home in his community since 1980, committed to taking care of the elderly.  He later started another Centre, taking care of children living with disabilities. He has sustained both organisations with the help of funding from different donors, and some of his own money. The winner says that money will go a long way in helping him expand the impact of his organisations. “There’s a lot children living with disabilities that are on the waiting list, waiting to receive help from our centre. We have not had enough money to accommodate them and this has been breaking my heart and giving me sleepless nights. I will use some of my winnings to improve this situation”, said the teary winner.

The winner has been running the NPOs with the help of his children who are fully hands-on in the organisations. His son says that from when he and his siblings where young, both his parents have always taught them the importance of helping others and sharing even the little that you have with them.

The winner received psychological counselling and extensive financial advice organised by ITHUBA, which he attended with his son.
