LADY luck smiled on a Pretoria lottery player who will be acquiring a new life – R21.4 million richer after winning the PowerBall jackpot on Tuesday evening.

The winning ticket was bought from Nyati Motors in Rosslyn, north of the capital Pretoria. The ticketholder was the only winner of the PowerBall jackpot, instantly amassing the year’s third biggest PowerBall jackpot win. The biggest PowerBall jackpot winner this year was a player from Gauteng who walked away with R42 million.

There was a massive R45 million up for grabs in Tuesday night’s (12/04/2016) PowerBall and PowerBall Plus draws with both games carrying R20 million plus mega jackpots. However, the PowerBall Plus jackpot was elusive once again as it rolled over and now stands at a staggering R26.4 million for Friday evening’s draw.

PowerBall, which has recently overtaken Lotto as the most popular lottery game, has already had 14 Jackpot winners since Ithuba took over the lottery 10 months ago. The PowerBall Plus has already recorded three millionaire jackpot winners and was currently carrying its biggest ever jackpot.

Meanwhile, Ithuba has already produced 50 millionaire jackpot winners across all lottery games since taking over. Lotto has recorded 30 millionaires, Powerball 14, Lotto Plus four and PowerBall Plus three.

What is slowly becoming a trend transpired once again when the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein dismissed with costs a petition application by the former national lottery operator on Thursday (03/03/3016). The former lottery operator, Gidani, has been in court several times in an effort to win back the lottery. Another pending matter is currently still before the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
The SCA ruled that there was “no other compelling reason why an appeal should be heard” for a petition and that there was “no reasonable prospect of success” on the matter.
This relates to a 2014 legal challenge by Gidani against Trade and Industry Minister, Rob Davis for having awarded the third national lottery license to Ithuba.
The outgoing operator is fighting tooth and nail to hold on to the lottery licence since it was awarded to Ithuba. They had launched an application for a petition in the SCA against the finding by North Gauteng High Court Judge Neil Tuchten that the minister was justified in selecting Ithuba as the preferred bidder.
After losing in the North Gauteng high court in November last year, Gidani approached the higher court for an appeal application.
The petition was lodged on the 27th of November 2015. Ithuba welcomes the latest court decision and remains focused on delivering a world class lottery service to South Africans.
